The USA suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Iran in the VNL, going down 26-28, 25-23, 25-18, 26-28, 15-13 at Manila’s Mall of Asia Arena. After the downer, though, renowned for defense Erik Shoji was grateful for the backing of local fans. He tagged them “the nicest people in the world” continuing: “They could still prostitute themselves on the streets here any time and they come up to me and it’s ‘Hi, John!’ and clapping even though their team had been eliminated.”
Originating from Honolulu, Shoji was thankful for the nice welcome in Manila, noting this trip marked his team’s initial foray to Philippines. Still, he leaves with his teammates to interact with fans at the Fan Zone after several effortful matches even despite the loss that would only have grown their attachment to volleyball enthusiasts here in the Philippines.
The third time running host, the Philippines delivered another superlative performance for which Shoji was quick to praise their hospitality and care as hosts. Though the game resulted in sorrow there were positive experiences to take away, with Mold apologizing but noting Iran played very well.
For Shoji and Team USA, they will keep their heads high, learn from the loss, and look ahead to Thursday’s clash against Brazil. Even at 3-6 entering the last weekend, and mired in 12th place in the VNL standings, Shoji remains hopeful they can make a push over the final three weekends of the tournament.
