Ukraine Claims Strike on Russian Oil Depot; Moscow Reports Gains in Donetsk Region

BTN News: In a bold move, Ukraine announced on Sunday that it had hit an important oil depot in southern Russia. This depot is very important to the Russian military. The attack shows Ukraine’s efforts to weaken Russian forces and their supplies. The Ukrainian General Staff said that their security services used drones to strike the oil depot in the Kursk region of Russia. This area is located in the southern part of Russia.

The attack led to big explosions and a fire. The fire likely involved containers filled with petroleum products. This depot has 11 tanks with a total capacity of about 7,000 cubic meters, which is roughly 247,202 cubic feet. The statement from Ukraine emphasized their ongoing efforts to weaken the military and economic power of the Russian occupiers. Ukraine wants to force Russia to end its armed aggression against them.

At the same time, Russia’s Ministry of Defense said they shot down seven Ukrainian drones over Russian territory during the night. A regional official said a drone attack caused a fire at the oil depot in Kursk province. Firefighters were working to control the flames that burned three fuel tanks. The acting regional governor, Alexey Smirnov, said no one was hurt despite the big damage.

The Kursk region borders Ukraine’s Sumy province. This area has been targeted by Ukrainian drones and other weapons many times in recent months. Ukraine has been consistently attacking Russian oil depots and military infrastructure. This shows a strategic push by Ukraine to use more advanced Western weapons to hit high-value targets within Russian territory.

On the ground in Ukraine, Russian forces are still moving forward in the eastern Donetsk region. The Russian Ministry of Defense said on Sunday that their troops had made progress westward, capturing areas near the cities of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. Russian forces claimed to have taken control of the villages of Prohres and Yevhenivka, which are about 30 kilometers, or 19 miles, east of Pokrovsk. This comes after Russia claimed to have captured the nearby village of Lozuvatske the day before. Russia says it has captured nearly a dozen villages in the Donetsk province this month.

These developments show the changing dynamics of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine’s use of drones to disrupt Russian supply lines and military infrastructure is a strategic move. It aims to weaken the logistics and operational strength of Russian forces. Meanwhile, Russia’s continued territorial gains in eastern Ukraine show their efforts to secure control over key areas.
