Tropical Storm Chris Brings Heavy Rains to Mexico Before Weakening

BTN News: On Sunday, Tropical Storm Chris formed in the Atlantic but quickly became a tropical depression by Monday. This is the third named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. The storm made landfall near Veracruz, Mexico, causing heavy rain and flooding.

Details and Impact of Storm in Mexico

As of 8:00 a.m. ET Monday, the National Hurricane Center said Chris was about 60 miles south-southwest of Túxpam, Mexico. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and was moving west at 12 mph. Chris is expected to move further inland over eastern Mexico and weaken more.

Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Due to Tropical Storm Chris

Tropical Storm Chris is expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain in parts of eastern Mexico. In higher areas like Guanajuato, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí, rain could be up to 12 inches. This much rain can cause flooding and landslides.

Overview of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Chris is the third tropical storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Earlier, Hurricane Beryl formed on June 28 and is heading toward the Caribbean. Mexico is expected to get hit hard by Beryl. Before Beryl, Tropical Storm Alberto hit northeastern Mexico around June 20. This storm brought heavy rains and sadly, four people died.

Predictions for the 2024 Hurricane Season

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, from June 1 to November 30, is expected to be very active. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts 17 to 25 named storms. There could be up to 13 hurricanes, with four being very strong, Category 3 or higher. Normally, an Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
