BTN News: Madrid, a city renowned for its stunning architecture and historical landmarks, is also home to some buildings that aren’t universally admired. Recently, the popular TikTok account ‘Madrid Secreto,’ which is known for sharing intriguing plans, stories, and news about the Madrid region, took to the streets to find out which building Madrileños consider the ugliest in their city. The responses were varied, and some surprising choices made the list, with a clear “winner” emerging after numerous opinions were gathered. This informal poll has sparked a conversation about architectural taste and the buildings that define Madrid’s skyline, for better or for worse.
The first building to be singled out, by an older woman, was La Torre Negra, officially known as Edificio Vallecas 20, located in the Ensanche de Vallecas neighborhood. She humorously remarked, “I would go to the psychiatrist and say, ‘Doctor, I open the window and see everything black,'” highlighting her distaste for the structure’s somber appearance. La Torre Negra’s dark, looming presence has clearly left a lasting impression on some of the city’s residents, though not necessarily a positive one.
Next up in the line of fire were the infamous Torres Colón. Just one word was enough for a passerby to express her feelings: “Horrendous.” These twin towers, which have long been a subject of debate among architects and the public alike, seem to evoke strong emotions, with their distinctive design often dividing opinion. Another young woman took aim at the Torres Blancas, describing them as “ugly and very strange.” These structures, despite their unique and innovative design, clearly don’t resonate with everyone.
The Mirador Building, situated in the northern neighborhood of Sanchinarro, also received some unflattering comments. This building, known for its large, central void and unconventional design, has been a polarizing figure in Madrid’s architectural landscape. While some admire its boldness, others, like those featured in the TikTok video, find it less appealing.
However, the most commonly criticized structures were the Cuatro Torres, the four skyscrapers that dominate Madrid’s skyline and have become a symbol of the city. Despite their iconic status, many Madrileños expressed their dislike, with the repeated sentiment being, “I don’t like them at all.” These towering giants, while impressive, seem to have failed to win the hearts of many locals.
Lastly, the Puerta América Hotel also made the list of least-loved buildings. A pair of young people passing by didn’t mince words, commenting, “I’m not going to lie… It’s very ugly.” This hotel, which boasts a unique design by several internationally renowned architects, clearly doesn’t appeal to everyone, further highlighting the subjective nature of architectural taste.
The TikTok video, which has garnered nearly 900,000 views and 45,000 likes, has sparked a lively discussion among Madrileños and beyond about the buildings that shape their city. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it seems that some structures in Madrid are more universally disliked than others. Whether it’s the dark, brooding presence of La Torre Negra or the towering dominance of the Cuatro Torres, these buildings have certainly left a mark on the city’s residents, albeit not always a positive one. As the debate continues, one thing is clear: architecture in Madrid is as diverse and opinionated as its people.
