Shogun Leads Emmy Nominations with Sofia Vergara Also in the Running

BTN News: The Emmy nominations for 2024 have been announced, bringing excitement and surprises. Leading the pack is the Japanese-themed drama “Shogun,” which has received an impressive 25 nominations. This adaptation of James Clavell’s historical novel has captivated audiences with its depiction of feudal Japan’s intricate and deadly court politics. Despite its heavy use of subtitles, “Shogun” managed to secure nominations for its extraordinary cast, including Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada. Surprisingly, Cosmo Jarvis, who plays the stranded English sailor framing the narrative, did not receive a nomination.

“The Bear” set a new record for the most nominations for a comedy in a single year, with 23 nods. This series, set in a chaotic Chicago restaurant, was lauded for its ambitious and experimental second season. It featured Michelin-star-worthy food montages and standout episodes like “Fishes,” which portrays a dysfunctional family dinner. “The Bear” will compete against other strong contenders in the comedy category, including “Hacks,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

“True Detective: Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster, leads the miniseries category with 19 nominations. Other notable contenders in this category include “Bebé reno,” a Netflix adaptation of Scottish comedian Richard Gadd’s show about his encounters with a stalker. Despite some controversy, “Bebé reno” received 11 nominations, including one for Gadd. “Fargo,” “Ripley,” and “Lessons in Chemistry” also garnered multiple nominations. However, Kate Winslet (“The Regime”) and Emma Stone (“The Curse”) were notable omissions from the nominations.

Latinas have made a significant impact in this year’s nominations. Colombian actress Sofía Vergara received a nomination for Best Actress in a Miniseries for her role in “Griselda,” a Netflix narco series she also produced. Mexican trans actress Nava Mau was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries for her acclaimed role in “Bebé reno.” Puerto Rican-American actress Liza Colón-Zayas earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role in “The Bear.”

The nominations were announced during a live ceremony from Los Angeles. The final voting for the 76th edition of the Emmys will take place next month, ahead of the ceremony on September 15. This year’s Emmy Awards will recognize TV series aired between June 2023 and May 2024. Tony Hale (“Veep”) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”) revealed the nominees. The Emmy Awards, which faced a delay last year due to Hollywood strikes, will hold their second ceremony in 2024. Voters from the Television Academy have until mid-August to catch up on nominated shows before casting their final votes.

As we look ahead to the Emmy Awards, “Shogun” stands out as a major contender in the drama categories, vying against the final season of Netflix’s British royal saga “The Crown” and Apple’s “The Morning Show” starring Jennifer Aniston. With its strong performances, writing, direction, and technical prowess, “Shogun” has all the elements in its favor, according to Deadline columnist Pete Hammond.
