Mexican Health Regulator Approves Paxlovid, First Covid-19 Treatment for Sale

BTN News: The Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has announced that Paxlovid is now available in Mexico. This is big news in the fight against Covid-19. Paxlovid is the first medicine approved in Mexico that can help prevent hospitalizations and reduce deaths caused by the virus.

Paxlovid is made by Pfizer and combines two drugs, nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. It is meant for adults who have Covid-19 but do not need extra oxygen. These adults are at higher risk of their illness becoming severe. Cofepris allowed the use of this drug after checking it thoroughly. They made sure it is safe, effective, and of good quality.

With this approval, Cofepris joins other health agencies around the world that have approved Paxlovid. These include the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Health Canada, Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), and Chile’s National Agency for Medicines (Anamed).

Cofepris has stressed that Paxlovid should only be taken with a doctor’s prescription. Doctors need to look at all the details and risks before giving this medicine to patients. This is to make sure that people do not misuse it or take it without proper guidance. Selling or using this drug without permission can be dangerous.

It is very important to remember that Paxlovid does not replace Covid-19 vaccines. People should not use this medicine without a doctor telling them to. If anyone sees this drug being sold illegally, they should report it to the authorities. Selling this drug without proper approval can harm public health.

Cofepris has also set up a way for people to report any bad reactions to Paxlovid. If someone takes the drug and feels unwell, they can tell Cofepris through their website. This helps to keep track of any problems and make sure people get the help they need.

The approval of Paxlovid in Mexico is a big step in the fight against Covid-19. This medicine can help reduce the number of people who need to go to the hospital and the number of deaths from the virus. This new tool can help ease the pressure on hospitals and improve the health of many people who are at risk.
