Medellín Faces Rising Crime: Two Millionaire Robberies Reported in Exclusive Neighborhoods

BTN News: In recent hours, two alarming cases of robbery involving motorcyclists, commonly known as “fleteo,” have shaken exclusive areas of Medellín, leaving residents concerned about their safety. These incidents, both characterized by their brazen nature, occurred in well-known neighborhoods of the capital of Antioquia, underscoring the ongoing challenges of urban crime in the city.

The first robbery took place near the Q’Office building in the affluent El Poblado district. Two armed thieves on a motorcycle targeted the driver of a luxury vehicle, who was later identified as a prominent surgeon. The criminals, displaying their weapon to intimidate the victim, forcibly took several valuable items, including jewelry and a mobile phone. However, in a rapid response by the police, the suspects were apprehended shortly after the incident, and the stolen items were promptly returned to the victim.

General Óscar Lamprea, commander of the Metropolitan Police of the Aburrá Valley, detailed the swift operation that led to the recovery of the stolen goods. He highlighted that the authorities were already aware of the modus operandi of these criminals, which facilitated the immediate intervention and capture of the culprits. “A motorcycle approached the doctor and intimidated him with a firearm, taking a chain and other personal items. But we knew how these activities usually unfold, and the criminals were quickly located, allowing us to recover the doctor’s belongings and return them to him,” General Lamprea explained.

A second incident of “fleteo” unfolded in the Laureles – Estadio area, another well-known district of Medellín. In this case, two men, also riding a motorcycle, intercepted a citizen who was parking his vehicle on a public road. According to the victim’s report to the authorities, the robbers threatened him with a firearm and managed to steal more than 25 million pesos in cash that he had in his possession.

Law enforcement agencies are diligently working to track down the suspects involved in this second robbery. The authorities are currently analyzing footage from security cameras in the area to identify the motorcycle used in the crime, aiming to locate the criminals and recover the stolen money.

These incidents have sparked renewed discussions about security in Medellín, particularly in its upscale neighborhoods. The swift action by the police in the first case was commendable, but the occurrence of such brazen crimes in broad daylight continues to raise concerns among residents. The authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as they continue their efforts to curb the surge in “fleteo” crimes across the city.
