BTN News: Summer has come, bringing Gru, his family, and the funny Minions, the yellow pill-shaped characters known for their funny language and cute overalls.
A Successful Franchise That Has Made Lots of Money Over the Years
“Despicable Me 4” is the latest part of a very successful animated series. The first three movies made over $2.548 billion worldwide. This big success surprised everyone involved in making the movies.
“I never thought we would make four films and many spin-offs,” said Steve Carell, the voice of Gru, in an interview with Universal Pictures. “When the first film came out, no one thought it would be so popular. My kids loved it, and that’s when I knew we had something special.”
Carell, 61, became famous for voicing Gru in 2010. He enjoys the joy and fame the role has brought him, especially among young fans.
A Beloved Character Who Is Loved by Everyone
“Gru feels like a part of me,” Carell shared. “I don’t always practice the voice, but I often leave voice messages for my friends’ kids. They truly believe Gru is real, which is very rewarding.”
New Challenges and Adventures That Gru and His Family Face
In this fourth film, available in theatres from Thursday, Gru and his wife, Lucy Wilde (voiced by Kristen Wiig), have grown their family. Along with Agnes, Edith, and Margo, they now have baby Gru, who surprisingly shows some dislike for his father. The family, with some Minions, must move to a secure area after the return of Gru’s old school enemy, Maxime Le Mal, voiced by Will Ferrell.
The move brings big changes, especially for Lucy, who becomes a stylist, a disguise that even the smartest investigators and villains would overlook.
Despite the challenges, Lucy stays positive. “Lucy sees everything as an adventure,” Wiig explained. “She’s trying to keep the family happy, even if she doesn’t like her new role.”
Wiig first joined the series as Miss Hattie in the first film. She was happy to come back as Lucy in the second movie. “I love being part of this universe. The movies are for everyone, and it feels great to make people happy, especially now.”
Competing at the Box Office With Other Big Movies
While “Inside Out 2” from Disney Pixar has been the top movie in 2024, earning $1.014 billion globally, it is not clear how “Despicable Me 4” will perform. The series has always made more money with each film: the first film earned $543.2 million, the second $970.7 million, and the third $1.034 billion. If this continues, the new film could compete with Pixar’s latest hit.
Star-Studded Cast With Many Famous Voices
Besides Carell and Wiig, “Despicable Me 4” has the voices of Will Ferrell as the bad guy, Colombian actress Sofía Vergara as Valentina, Maxime Le Mal’s girlfriend, Miranda Cosgrove as Margo, Dana Gaier as Edith, and Madison Skyy Polan as Agnes. The film promises to be a family favourite, full of action, comedy, and heartwarming moments.
