Freed Prisoners from Russia Exchange Arrive in the US

BTN News: In a significant event, three Americans have come back to the United States after being released from detention in Russia. This happened because of an important prisoner exchange. Former Marine Paul Whelan, Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, and Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva were greeted at Joint Base Andrews. Their families, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris were there to welcome them.

When they arrived, they received a warm welcome. Paul Whelan was the first to get off the plane. He shook hands with President Biden and Vice President Harris. Then, Evan Gershkovich got off the plane. He had spent 491 days in detention in Russia. This marked the end of his difficult time there. He hugged his parents after greeting the president. Alsu Kurmasheva was the last to get off the plane. She ran to her husband and daughters, and they had a very emotional reunion after meeting with the president and vice president.

Vice President Harris thanked President Biden for his efforts. She talked about how important diplomacy is and how building alliances can lead to big achievements. She said that the president’s understanding of the power of diplomacy was key in reuniting these families.

This exchange brought relief to the families and showed the strength of international partnerships. President Biden thanked allies for their help, especially Germany and Slovenia. He praised German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his great support even though it was difficult.

At the press conference, Gershkovich said he was happy to be home. He thanked his colleagues and Wall Street Journal’s editor-in-chief, Emma Tucker, for their hard work in getting him released. His colleagues, who had gathered to welcome him, were clearly moved by the reunion.

President Biden also talked about the growing tensions in the Middle East. He urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to work for a quick ceasefire in Gaza. The three Americans were set to spend time with their families before going to San Antonio. There, they would have medical check-ups at Brooke Army Medical Center.
