Emergency at Olmeca Refinery in Tabasco After Toxic Gas Leak on Saturday Afternoon

BTN News: On Saturday afternoon, July 6, 2024, there was an emergency at the Olmeca refinery in Paraíso, Tabasco. A toxic gas leak happened there. This is another accident in this place.

Workers Evacuated Quickly Because of Strong Gas Smell

Workers in the refinery had to leave quickly because they smelled strong gas. This was told by sources to El Heraldo de Tabasco. First reports say the gas leak was in the ICA Fluor area. Pemex and refinery officials have not said anything yet.

Video Shows Workers Running Out With Sirens Blaring in the Background

A video showed workers running out of the complex while sirens were making noise. The workers, in orange uniforms, rushed out fast. Some tried to make their friends move faster.

No One Hurt but Workers Were Very Scared During the Emergency

No one was hurt in this big emergency, but workers were very scared. Civil Protection said the leak was hydrogen sulfide gas. They have now stopped the leak.

Other Accidents Happened Before in Olmeca Refinery and People Were Hurt

This is not the first accident in the Olmeca refinery. On June 21, 2023, El Heraldo de Tabasco told about a fire. A truck was loading fuel near a compressor. The fire was in the HDN plant run by MEPI, a Samsung subcontractor. People had to leave, and five people were hurt.

Refinery Set to Start Permanent Operations Soon and President to Visit

The new incident happened just before the refinery starts making gasoline all the time. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will visit soon. But the date is not fixed yet.
