BTN News: Flooding and landslides across southern China have killed at least 13 people and left scores more missing after some of the heaviest rains in decades, state television reports. Torrential rains in Shanghang, in China’s Fujian province, have affected 66,500 people, with the rain still falling, the official Xinhua news agency said in its latest update.
In several southern provinces, the situation is still bleak. More heavy rainfall is forecast for Wednesday particularly in Guangxi, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang with flood alerts issued by the authorities, especially in northern Guangxi and Fujian, where there are numerous rivers.
In economic terms, the provinces that were affected the most suffered millions of dollars in losses, especially in infrastructure damage and agricultural collapse.
Meanwhile, there is another extreme in northern China led by the trans-regional high temperature around Beijing with a high temperature scale of 40 degrees.
Xi encouraged the government in an urgent statement to use all means to help the flood victims and tackle dry conditions in other parts of the country.
The co-occurrence of these weather extremes highlights a greater challenge for China, and underscores the necessity of having strong preparedness systems and methods for natural disasters.
