Back-to-School Costs: Families Brace for €300 Per Child on Supplies, Turning to Second-Hand Options for Savings

BTN News: As summer begins to wind down and families savor the last days of vacation, many parents are already bracing themselves for the upcoming challenges of the back-to-school season. The notorious “September slope,” marked by the return to classrooms, starts to loom over families as early as August, bringing with it the inevitable expenses for school supplies, textbooks, and uniforms. With the cost of living on the rise, this period is particularly stressful for many households, prompting a significant number of them to explore ways to cut costs and manage the financial strain more effectively.

A recent survey conducted by Milanuncios, reported by EFE, highlights the growing concern among Spanish families regarding the rising costs associated with the new school year. According to the survey, a staggering 90% of families are worried about the increase in school supply prices, and 44% fear they will have to allocate a larger budget than they did in 2023. On average, families estimate that they will spend up to 300 euros on essential items such as stationery, textbooks, backpacks, and uniforms. The survey also reveals that more than half of Spanish families (55%) are considering turning to second-hand options to mitigate the financial burden, with many hoping to save between 100 and 199 euros by doing so.

The back-to-school expenses, which include everything from notebooks and pens to school uniforms, are expected to vary significantly depending on the type of school and the grade level of the children. According to the survey data, stationery and textbooks account for the largest portion of the budget, with 80% and 78% of families, respectively, indicating that these items represent the most substantial costs. Backpacks, which are essential yet often overlooked, are expected to take up a considerable 57% of the budget, while clothing and uniforms follow closely behind at 47%.

As the financial pressure mounts, families are increasingly looking for ways to save. The survey shows that 67% of respondents have previously opted for second-hand school supplies, and more than half are considering it again this year. This trend highlights the growing importance of sustainable and cost-effective solutions in the face of rising prices.

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has offered practical advice to help families navigate the financial challenges of the back-to-school season. One of the most effective strategies recommended by the OCU is to compare prices across different stores, as the price differences can be substantial. Taking advantage of the numerous discounts and special offers available in the weeks leading up to the start of school is also a smart move, though it’s important not to go overboard. As the OCU wisely points out, sometimes less is more—buying only what is truly needed can prevent unnecessary expenses.

Another useful tip from the OCU is to take stock of the supplies already on hand before making any new purchases. By carefully checking what items are still in good condition, families can avoid buying duplicates and reduce their overall spending. Creating a detailed shopping list can also help keep track of what is needed, ensuring that nothing is forgotten or purchased on impulse.

In addition, the OCU suggests that parents consider shopping without their children to avoid being swayed by their preferences for trendy or branded items. While it may be tempting to indulge children’s requests for a particular character-themed pencil case or backpack, sticking to more practical and cost-effective options can lead to significant savings.

For items like clothing and footwear, the OCU recommends spreading out purchases over time. This approach not only eases the financial burden but also allows for better planning and budgeting. Furthermore, participating in collaborative consumption programs or taking advantage of local and regional initiatives for textbook lending can provide substantial savings. In recent years, various platforms and associations have emerged to facilitate the exchange of clothing, textbooks, and other school supplies, making it easier for families to access what they need without breaking the bank.

As the back-to-school season approaches, it’s clear that many families are feeling the financial strain more acutely than ever. However, with careful planning, smart shopping, and a willingness to explore second-hand options, it is possible to alleviate some of the stress and make the return to school a smoother, more affordable experience. By following the tips and strategies outlined by the OCU, families can navigate the September slope with greater ease and confidence, ensuring that their children have everything they need for a successful academic year without compromising their financial stability.
