Contributions to Power Generation in the Dominican Republic: Ensuring a Reliable and Sustainable Energy Future

BTN News: The Dominican Association of the Electric Industry (ADIE) has clarified recent concerns regarding the availability of certain power generation units within the National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI). In a letter addressed to Diario Libre, ADIE emphasized that even if some units may not be operational with a specific type of fuel at a given moment, they continue to contribute to the country’s energy supply by switching to alternative resources. This statement comes in response to recent reports on the status of electricity generators as of August 22, 2024. ADIE underscores the adaptability of many power plants in the Dominican Republic, highlighting their capability to operate using various fuel types, ensuring a steady and reliable electricity supply across the nation.

The total electricity demand supplied on August 22 reached 80 gigawatt-hours (GWh), while the available energy exceeded this demand, totaling 95 GWh. This surplus is indicative of the system’s flexibility and robustness, allowing it to adjust to different operational conditions without compromising the stability of the national grid. ADIE’s communication stresses that even when specific units face limitations due to fuel constraints, the system remains resilient, thanks to the ability of these units to switch to other energy sources, thus maintaining consistent power generation.

Efforts to reach ADIE and other relevant entities for further details on the Coordinator’s report were unsuccessful by the time Diario Libre’s publication deadline approached. However, Manuel Cabral, the executive vice president of ADIE, reassured the public of SENI’s capability to meet the country’s energy needs effectively. He affirmed that the system is well-equipped to handle fluctuations in energy demand, with a strong focus on ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted power supply.

Cabral also highlighted ADIE’s commitment to transparency and open communication with the media and the public. He expressed the organization’s willingness to provide necessary technical context and explanations, aiming to foster a better understanding of the energy sector’s dynamics among the general population.

Regarding the current state of electricity generation, Cabral confirmed that there is no shortage in the country’s energy supply. On August 22, 2024, the available energy exceeded the demand by 19%, demonstrating that the system not only meets the current electricity needs but also maintains a reserve margin. This reserve, which totaled 15 GWh, serves as a buffer to ensure continuous electricity supply, even in the face of unforeseen challenges.

The robust nature of the Dominican Republic’s electrical system is a testament to the careful planning and strategic investments made over the years. The ability of power plants to adapt to different fuel types ensures that the country can maintain a stable energy supply, reducing the risk of blackouts or energy shortages. As the Dominican Republic continues to grow and its energy demands increase, the flexibility and resilience of SENI will play a crucial role in supporting the nation’s development.

ADIE’s statement underscores the importance of a diverse energy mix and the role of innovative solutions in sustaining the country’s energy needs. By leveraging various resources and maintaining a surplus in energy generation, the Dominican Republic is well-positioned to ensure a steady, reliable, and efficient energy supply for its citizens and industries.

This proactive approach not only supports the nation’s current energy requirements but also prepares it for future challenges, ensuring that the Dominican Republic remains on a path toward sustainable growth and development.
