Impact of Authorities’ Crackdown on ‘Clan del Golfo’ Structure in Northern Valle del Cauca

BTN News: In a significant blow to the financial, logistical, and military operations of the notorious ‘Clan del Golfo’ in Valle del Cauca, authorities have managed to dismantle a crucial part of this criminal organization. This success is the result of a coordinated effort between the Colombian Army, Police, and the Attorney General’s Office, leading to the capture of six high-ranking members of the cartel in a series of nine operations across five municipalities. This targeted crackdown is seen as a major step in disrupting the cartel’s expansion plans in the region, particularly in the Cañón de las Garrapatas, a historically strategic area for drug trafficking activities.

The arrests, which took place in the municipalities of Riofrío, Trujillo, Roldanillo, Zarzal, and Cali, have significantly weakened the cartel’s influence in Valle del Cauca. Among those captured was ‘Lázaro,’ along with ‘Jenifer’ or ‘Andrea,’ who handled the cartel’s finances and was also the partner of ‘Dimax,’ the top leader of the Clan del Golfo in the region. This operation not only hindered their attempt to extend their control over these municipalities but also helped clarify six homicides and several extortion cases.

The operation also saw the seizure of a firearm, 66 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, ten cell phones, military-grade equipment, and cash, further crippling the gang’s operational capabilities. For the local authorities, this success is critical in preventing the cartel from establishing a stronghold in Valle del Cauca through a campaign of violence and intimidation, which had been marked by extortion and assassinations.

The governor of Valle del Cauca, Dilian Francisca Toro, emphasized that this operation was vital in halting the advance of the Clan del Golfo, which had begun exerting influence in the department through criminal activities. The joint efforts of the Army, Police, and local government were crucial in this significant achievement.

Brigadier General Juan Oduber Rendón Pérez, commander of the Third Brigade of the Colombian Army, noted that this operation is part of a broader offensive strategy focused on dismantling criminal operations in the Cañón de las Garrapatas. Since January 1, a concerted effort involving the National Police, the governor’s office, and municipal governments has been underway to make a lasting impact on communities affected by these criminal networks.

The success of this operation underscores the importance of continued collaboration between the military, police, and local authorities in combatting organized crime in Colombia. By disrupting the Clan del Golfo’s operations in Valle del Cauca, authorities have sent a strong message that criminal groups will not be allowed to operate with impunity. This victory marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle to bring stability and security to regions long plagued by the influence of drug trafficking organizations.
