Over 5,000 People Rescued After Severe Floods in Northwest North Korea

BTN News: In an amazing rescue effort, more than 5,000 people trapped by severe flooding in northwest North Korea were saved. The operation, led by Kim Jong Un, was reported by state media on Monday. Heavy rains on Saturday caused a river between North Korea and China to overflow. This created a serious crisis, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Around ten military helicopters and several boats from the navy and government were used in the evacuation. The rescue teams worked in Sinuiju and Uiju, where many residents were stuck because of the floodwaters. Despite bad weather, each helicopter made several trips. They managed to airlift about 4,200 people from the flooded areas.

Kim Jong Un was in charge of the rescue efforts on Sunday. He made sure that food and other necessary items were given to the people affected by the floods. He also set up plans for recovery and continued relief work. Kim called the rescue effort “miraculous” because so many people were saved.

Floods in North Korea during the summer often cause a lot of damage. This is because the country has poor drainage systems, deforestation, and old infrastructure. In recent years, North Korea has faced many challenges, including typhoons and heavy rains in 2020. Kim has said these problems, along with pandemic restrictions and United Nations sanctions on their nuclear program, have caused many crises.

During his visit to the flooded area, Kim scolded local officials for not being prepared. He said they had ignored his orders to take actions to prevent flood damage. Kim was unhappy with their defeatist attitude towards natural disasters. He stressed the importance of being proactive in preventing such disasters. Kim pointed out that the emergency response agency and the Ministry of Public Security did not even know how many people lived in the affected areas. This lack of information led to more rescues than expected.

Experts believe Kim’s criticism of the officials serves two purposes. It helps him avoid blame and shows him as a leader who cares about his people. This is important as North Korea deals with economic problems and international isolation. By showing he is in control during crises, Kim can strengthen his authority.

The recent floods highlight the ongoing issue of environmental problems and poor infrastructure in North Korea. The country needs to improve its disaster preparedness and response systems. As North Korea continues to face natural disasters, its leaders’ ability to manage these situations and protect the people is under close watch.

After the floods, the focus will be on recovery and rebuilding. The government’s promise to provide help to the affected areas is crucial. This support will help reduce the long-term effects of the disaster. It is also important to take steps to prevent future flooding. This will help protect the lives and well-being of North Korean citizens.
