Typhoon Gaemi Causes Floods and Landslides in Taiwan After Killing 22 in the Philippines

BTN News: Typhoon Gaemi has caused serious problems in Taiwan. It has brought floods to low-lying areas, landslides, and damage to homes and businesses. The strong storm hit the island, leading to three deaths and over 220 injuries in Taiwan. This disaster has closed offices and schools for two days in a row. Authorities are telling people to stay inside and avoid coastal areas. Even though Taiwan has better warning systems now, its crowded population, difficult land, and high-tech economy make it hard to prevent injuries during such bad weather.

The Storm’s Deadly Path in the Philippines

As Gaemi moved across the western Pacific, it caused damage in the Philippines too. The storm led to 22 deaths because of floods and landslides. At least three people are missing. The death count keeps rising as rescue teams work. The Philippine Coast Guard reported a tanker, the MT Terra Nova, sank near Limay in Bataan province. It carried about 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil. They saved 15 out of 16 crew members. It is not clear if the storm caused the ship to sink. The rough seas made it hard to control a possible oil spill quickly.

Quiet in Taipei as the Typhoon Hits

In Taiwan, the usually busy capital city of Taipei was strangely calm. There was light rain and sometimes strong winds. The typhoon affected the whole island, stopping daily activities and canceling air maneuvers on Taiwan’s east coast. Gaemi, called Carina in the Philippines, did not hit land there but made the monsoon rains worse, causing bad floods and landslides.

Philippine President Orders More Help for Affected Areas

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered more help for isolated rural areas. People there may not have eaten for days. In a meeting shown on TV, Marcos stressed the need for quick aid. He pointed out the serious situation in flooded regions. The storm also led to the closing of schools and government offices around Manila because of widespread floods.

Storm Moves Toward Mainland China

As Gaemi moves northwest toward mainland China, its effects are expected to last until Friday. In China’s eastern Fujian province, ferry routes were stopped, and railway services were paused to prepare for the storm. The Chinese government, through the official Xinhua News Agency, has taken steps to reduce the storm’s damage.

Conclusion: The Power of Nature

Typhoon Gaemi shows how strong nature can be, causing big problems in both Taiwan and the Philippines. The work of authorities and rescue teams is very important now. They need to help people quickly and prevent more damage. As the storm goes on, being alert and ready is key to protecting lives and property in its path.
