Chinese University Student Publicly Accuses Professor of Sexual Harassment

BTN News: A student working towards her PhD at one of China’s top universities has accused her supervisor of sexual harassment and threats. This news has caused a lot of discussion on social media. The university has started an investigation.

Wang Di, a doctoral student at Renmin University’s School of Liberal Arts, shared her story on Weibo, a popular Chinese social media site. In a 59-minute video, Wang showed her identification card briefly and talked about her experiences. She said her supervisor, who is also a vice dean and was a former representative of the Communist Party at the university, abused her both physically and verbally. By Monday afternoon, her video had over 1.73 million likes and many supportive comments.

Wang said the harassment started over two years ago. She said her supervisor gave her many unpaid tasks, scolded her often, and threatened to stop her from graduating if she did not accept his advances. Wang shared screenshots of messages she said were from her professor. In these messages, he asked to meet her in his office on May 21, 2022. She also shared audio recordings that she said proved the harassment. In one recording, a man tries to kiss a woman who keeps saying, “No, no, professor.”

“I cannot take this anymore, and I have nowhere else to go. So, I am telling my story,” Wang wrote. She asked for legal action against her supervisor and for a new advisor. Wang said she was ready to face any legal consequences for her accusations.

The Associated Press could not independently check Wang’s claims or the recordings. Renmin University took the accusations seriously. The university said on Monday that it had created a team to investigate. The university has a zero-tolerance policy towards bad behavior by teachers. The university promised to announce the results of the investigation soon.

Sexual harassment accusations in China are rare now. There was a brief increase in cases due to the #MeToo movement, but the government quickly stopped it. The Chinese Communist Party controls social movements tightly and sees them as threats to stability and its power.

This case reminds people of other well-known sexual harassment cases in China. In June, a Chinese journalist who fought for women’s rights was sentenced to five years in prison. She was charged with inciting subversion of state authority. Also, in 2021, Peng Shuai, a former Chinese tennis star, accused a high-ranking official, Zhang Gaoli, of sexual assault. Her accusations were quickly deleted from the internet, and discussions about her case are still heavily censored.

Wang Di’s decision to speak out has brought attention back to the issue of sexual harassment in China. It shows the ongoing problems victims face when seeking justice in a society where these issues are often hidden. Many people hope the investigation will lead to more accountability and protection for students and teachers.
