BTN News: Kim Kardashian, 43, has been through a lot, but one experience changed her forever. In 2016, she was held at gunpoint during a robbery in Paris. This terrifying event left a deep impact on her, making her feel “frozen” emotionally. Kim has realized that staying calm saved her life during the incident, but it also led to her becoming emotionally numb. Now, she is working with her therapist to address these issues before they completely hinder her ability to express herself. In a candid conversation on the latest episode of ‘The Kardashians,’ Kim opened up about her struggle with emotional detachment and her journey towards healing.
During the show, Kim, who shares four children with her ex-husband Kanye West, confided in her sister Khloé about the lasting effects of the robbery. She recalled her therapist’s words: “You believe that calm is your superpower. I think you’re so desensitized by trauma that you’re literally frozen in fight or flight. Something happened to you, you stayed calm, and it worked for you. So you always choose calm.” This insight helped Kim understand her current emotional state and why she has been struggling to feel and express her emotions.
Khloé, 40, quickly pointed out that the Paris robbery had a significant impact on Kim’s behavior. She reminded Kim of her past, saying, “You weren’t calm before. Kim, you were a lunatic. You became calm. You were never calm as a teenager or in your 20s. You cried over everything. You were spoiled. You threw tantrums. Everything changed after you were robbed because you stayed calm in that situation and even said, ‘My calm is what kept me alive.’ That’s when it started. You don’t have to be a detective to figure that out.”
In a confessional, Kim expressed her concerns about her calm demeanor being misinterpreted or taken advantage of. She said, “Imagine having a gun pointed at your head, being tied up, dragged across a hotel room, and the guy says, ‘Stay calm and you’ll live.’ I did. [That] worked for me at the time, and I think it saved my life. But I think I’ve become too calm to the point where people might take advantage of my calmness or that I’m becoming a robot with no emotion.”
Kim previously shared that during the robbery, she feared the thieves would shoot her in the back. She recounted the harrowing experience on an episode of ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’: “They asked for money. I told them I had no money. They dragged me into the hallway at the top of the stairs. That’s when I saw the gun, clear as day. I was looking at the gun, looking at the stairs. I thought, ‘I have a split second in my mind to make this decision: I’m going to run down the stairs, but what if they shoot me in the back? What if the elevator doesn’t open in time, or the stairs are blocked?’ I was screwed. There was no way out.”
Kim Kardashian’s journey from a traumatic event to emotional numbness highlights the complex ways trauma can affect individuals. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health and the need for professional help in processing traumatic experiences. As she continues to work with her therapist, Kim hopes to regain her ability to express emotions and live a more balanced life.
