On Saturday, August 17, WhatsApp released a guide titled “How to Detect Scams and Stay Safe.” The platform’s administrators emphasized that anyone can be a target of a scam, but by following a few security tips, you can significantly reduce your risk. The first and most crucial piece of advice is to be wary of any unknown number that contacts you, particularly if the message asks for personal information, offers money, or contains suspicious links. In such cases, WhatsApp suggests three immediate actions: do not respond, click, or forward the message; block and report the sender; and update your privacy settings to control who can reach out to you.
Beyond these initial steps, WhatsApp explains that scam messages often come from users who are not saved in your contact list and may attempt to deceive you into revealing sensitive information. This type of attack is commonly known as “spoofing,” where the attacker impersonates a legitimate entity to trick the victim.
To help users deal with these situations, WhatsApp recommends a four-step approach. The first step is to “Pause and Think.” It’s essential to stay alert to any suspicious behavior, such as messages from unknown numbers, pressure to act quickly, threats, or requests for money or personal information.
The second step is to “Stop the Conversation.” If you can’t verify the identity of the person contacting you, it’s best to end the conversation immediately. Don’t share any personal or financial information with them.
The third step is to “Block and Report.” This ensures that the user can no longer contact you, and it also helps WhatsApp track down and deal with fraudulent accounts.
Finally, the fourth step involves “Updating Your Privacy and Security Settings.” By adjusting your settings, you can control who sees your personal information and who can contact you. Additionally, activating two-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your account, making it harder for scammers to gain access.
WhatsApp also provides guidance on how to recognize suspicious messages. Key red flags include spelling or grammatical errors, requests to click on a link to activate new features or download an app, and demands for personal information such as credit card numbers or passwords. Other warning signs include messages that ask you to forward them to others, requests for money, claims that you need to pay to use WhatsApp, or attempts by the scammer to pose as someone you know. Scammers may also try to build trust with you before asking for personal information, so it’s important to stay vigilant even if the conversation seems harmless at first.
