Formula 1Sergio Perez (Red Bull) won the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at Baku Street Circuit on Sunday. The Mexican took his sixth career win at the age of 33 and followed it up with his second this season in Saudi Arabia. He had already won the first sprint race of the season on Saturday.
Pérez, who started from third on the grid, was 2.137 seconds ahead of his teammate Max Verstappen. The third place went to Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), 21.217 seconds ahead of Spain’s Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin-Mercedes).
Verstappen, 25, the double reigning world champion who won last year, remains leading the championship standings after 4 of the season’s 23 meetings. He has 93 marks. Perez returns to score 6 points (87). Alonso (60), Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), 6th Sunday (48) and Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), follow in that order in Baku, 5th (34) and Leclerc (28).
Briton George Russell (Mercedes), finishing 8th, set the fastest lap of the race (1:43.370) in the final lap.
quiet race for perez
Starting from second on the grid, Verstappen overtook poleman Charles Leclerc and his Ferrari at the start of the fourth lap thanks to DRS. Two laps later the Monegasque saw the second Red Bull, that of Pérez, overtake him at the same place.
After the crash of Nyck de Vries (Alpha Tauri) when the safety car entered the track on lap 11, Verstappen, who had just changed tyres, then found himself in third. If he quickly dominated Leclerc, the Dutchman could never get back to Pérez, who had a quieter race.
The 5th Grand Prix will take place next Sunday, May 7 in Miami, Florida
