Murphy joins Braves in trade with Brewers and Athletics

ATLANTA ( Associated Press) – The Atlanta Braves acquired catcher Sean Murphy from the Oakland Athletics on Monday as part of a three-team deal that sent catcher William Contreras to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Oakland hosted catcher Manny Pina, as well as pitching prospects Kyle Mueller, Freddy Tarnock and Royber Salinas from Atlanta, and outfield prospect Esteri Ruiz from Milwaukee. The Brewers retained the rights to Joel Payemps and Justin Yeager.

Murphy, 28, led all catchers in the American League in hits (114), doubles (28), and extra-base hits (46) last season, with a .250 batting average, 18 home runs, 66 RBIs and a . . 759 OPS in 148 games. He won the Gold Glove in 2021.

Contreras, who turns 25 on Dec. 24, was named to the National League All-Star Game as the 2022 designated hitter. He hit .278 with 20 homers, 45 RBI and .860 OPS, with 57 starts as a catcher, 31 as a designated hitter and one in left field.

The Brewers also improved their bullpen with Payamps, who went 3–6 with a 3.23 ERA in 41 games last season with the Kansas City Royals and A’s. Yeager spent 2022 in the Braves system.

Oakland added plenty of prospects to the deal, as well as Pina, 35, who made just five appearances for the Braves in 2022 before undergoing season-ending wrist surgery.

In other moves, the Athletics designated Puerto Rican infielder Wimel Machín by assignment.
